hook that book

What was your favorite children's book? Mine was, and still is, a lovely book called Miss Rumphius, written and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. In fact, I have a signed copy! It is a wonderful story of Miss Rumphius, who, as a young girl, says she will grow up and travel to faraway places, but then come back and live by the sea when she is an old lady. She also resolves to find a way to make the world more beautiful.

Look at these illustrations- aren't they just gorgeous? I'd love to have some of these prints in my house! Love them.

The rest of the pictures in the book are equally amazing. Go out and buy it, and you will love it. The story is inspiring. We can all find little ways to try to make the world just a little more beautiful. It's the little things, remember.

This weekend, I am throwing a baby shower for a friend, and of course, there is a book theme. I asked each person to bring a copy of their favorite children's book for the baby, to begin his library. I am also doing a book-related game. I have a list of well-known children's books and then a list (two columns, on the same page!) of the authors. People will be asked to match the name with the author. Whoever gets the most right will get a prize, which will be a book, natch. Maybe even Miss Rumphius, if I can find a copy (I don't always see it in bookstores, so sad!)

Tell me your favorite children's book, so I can add it to my list! I don't want this to be too hard for people....I know that not everyone follows children's literature as closely as I do ;)

OH! I just had to write to you - normally I am one of your blog lurkers. But today I had to let you know that I am also a fan of Miss Rumphius. The pictues and the story are soooo beautiful. Miss Rumphius is my dream - I wanted to be here before I had children (and some days with children!!). I, too grew up in New England and have a love of the ocean embedded in my soul. I live in West Texas now, far from the ocean - but I travel to New England each summer. I can't wait this to kiss the sand when I go back - I've missed it so! Anyway, how lucky you are to have an autographed story - a true treasure!

I have two other favorite children's books - Little Red Hen - the story I've tried to instill into my children. My other favorite is Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. The illustrations are precious and Mr. Henkes writes well.

Thank you so much for making my morning with your post - Miss Rumphius is a wonderful memory.

I loved Miss Rumphius! I finally bought the boy's niece a copy this past Christmas, and can't wait to read it to my future children. And I even planted lupins in my backyard, so hopefully they'll grow! I love lupins, really because of that book.

As for other books I used to love the Francis books. Other good classic ones I can think of are Madeline, Blueberries for Sal, The Little Engine that Could, The Velveteen Rabbit.... I know I've posted before on my favorite children's books before if you still need more for your party!

I love the books Make Way for Ducklings and Blueberries for Sal.

I would always check these books out of the Berea Elementary Library and keep them with me at all times! I have my own copies now and still read them!

Have a nice weekend.

Best
Tracy :)

What a great idea for a shower! You just can't have too many books. I don't have any books from my childhood, but my parents took me to the library twice a month to check out books. I loved the Trixie Belden series. When my kids were born, I joined book clubs to build a collection, we have way too many books now, but I have a hard time passing them on. My son is 9 now and wants to keep everything, I don't blame him! A favorite my son and I wore out and my daughter is enjoying now is Good night Moon. We also love the My Sloppy Tiger, Ollie the Stomper, all the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series. My very favorite is one my sister gave me, an illustrated copy of Frosty the Snowman, with the musical notes included. I sing it to my daughter now so she'll know the music I grew up with.
