where in the world is Lexi?

So after reading everyone's posts, I've decided to participate in Where in the World Wednesday, hosted by Miss Classy in Philadelphia. I've been thinking about it for a while, but always forgot until it seemed like it was too late, but here I am!

This is me in Zakopane, Poland, which is a resort town on the Polish-Slovak border. When I lived in Krakow, we went there several times, as it was only about two hours away and such a neat place. I really adore it. It lies at the foot of the Tatra Mountains and is a ski resort town. They've hosted several ski championships in past years too!

There are two streets that intersect and all along those streets are amazing restaurants and booths selling all sorts of wonderfulness. People sell handmade wooden toys, knit sweaters, blankets made of sheepskin and wool, mittens and hats, slippers and everything else you can think of.

Including puppies!!!

These puppies are called owczarek podhalanski, or Tatra Mountain sheepdogs. They are the most adorable and wonderful dogs you've ever seen, and as you can see, I totally fell in love with this little guy! Also, they are huge. In that photo, the puppy I am holding was about six weeks old! They grow up to be larger than St. Bernards! I want one in the worst way. In a perfect world, I'd have an owczarek and a corgi :)

I remember the first time I saw them- there was a group of teenage boys selling these puppies. They had a few of them in boxes and you could hold them. In my not so great Polish, I asked the cost. I almost died when the boy told me that he was only $75! If I were to find one here, they'd probably be a few thousand dollars, as they are a very rare breed in North America. Of course, if I were Polish, and not a "rich American," I could bargain, but as soon as they hear my accent, it's all over! On another occasion, a Polish friend's sister bargained one of the boys down to around $25! (of course, these puppies are technically too young to leave their mother, and don't have the proper papers to come into the U.S., but that's a whole other story!)

So one of the days, one of these Polish puppies will be mine :) Yes, Steve is aware of my obsession with them!

Did you ever fall in love with anything crazy while abroad?

the pits

I was just looking at the website for the Washington Humane Society (shocking...) and noticed that the good majority of dogs there needing homes are pit bulls, or pit mixes. I know that there can be issues with this breed and many people are afraid of them for various reasons, but it made me sad! They all are adorable and just want someone to love them. I hate how some breeds are so misunderstood and get a bad reputation because of a few bad seeds. Like rottweilers, for example. So many people wouldn't consider having them in their homes, but they can be such wonderfu dogs if they get the proper training. At the S.P.C.A. in Arlington , there is a rottweiler named Angel who has been there for such a long time, it breaks my heart. I know she's been there well over a year, if not longer, because, you know me, I look at these websites far more often then I should! If I could adopt her, I would, but a 90+ pound dog would not be happy in my little apartment. I don't even think she'd be happy at Steve's- she needs a yard. Speaking of Steve's, his neighbor's have a rottie who is on the porch all the time- never outside playing and it makes me really sad for the dog. I really kind of want to sneak over to rescue him sometime, but Steve won't let me...

This summer, I really think I am going to start volunteering with one of the rescue leagues. There are so many in DC, so it isn't as though I have to search for one...

If you were to adopt a dog, what breed would you want?

crumpet!

Oh my! Look at her! Her name is Crumpet! Right, she looks more beagle than corgi, but her name is Crumpet, like my blog! Maybe it's a sign?

puppy love

I know that I talk about corgis and how much I want one a lot (is it excessive?)

I think that this summer I will really begin to look. My classes will be over (though I still have two more to take this fall, but that is another post for another day). So, I won't be home as late and would have more time with my puppy.

Oh, and when I say puppy, I don't mean puppy puppy. I pretty much say puppy to mean a dog of any age. When I look into getting one, it won't be an actual puppy, I'd prefer one a little older, who is hopefully already house trained!

So, any of you in/around Mississippi who want to swing by Starkville and pick up Janey for me?

doggone it

So unless you live under a rock, you must have heard the monstrous deal that has been made about the Portuguese water dog that the Obama family got. It seems that instead of finding one at a shelter, as he said they would, good old Senator Kennedy gave them one. How kind of him.

So much for supporting the local shelters, because if they had looked, they could have found him.

Booooo Mr. Obama.

pot 'o jumbles

  • I've spent the morning taking pictures of a board meeting, where four of the members didn't arrive, due to the "inclement" weather we are experiencing
  • I was up way too late last night, mostly due to my outrage at The Bachelor. Molly should have told him she was over him and was no with something else. That would have been SO much better!
  • I almost got locked inside the U.S. Botanical Gardens last week
  • I fell in love with another corgi, this one called Clara. By the time I emailed the shelter (she was in Altoona, PA), she'd been adopted. Yes, I tried calling too. Boooo. I need to stop looking for corgis, because I never get the one I want
  • there is a dog adoption event at a nearby winery this weekend. It's on my schedule
  • I love Milky Way Darks
  • I wish it had really snowed yesterday. Like, really snowed.
  • I need to pay my overdue fine to the DC Public Library

yes please!

I think that we would all agree that I really need her....

Am I wrong? No? Didn't think so.

save the puppies!

Like every morning, I had the news on while I got ready for work this morning. Since I live in a small apartment, the tv is in the main (and only, to be technical) room (it's a studio/efficiency, whatever you want to call it), so I can easily hear the tv while I'm in the bathroom.

Like in the news in the last few weeks, they began talking about the floods in Iowa. I may have mentioned, Steve is from IA, so this has been on both our minds lately, for obvious reasons. His immediate family is not in the flood zones, but he does have many friends in the Cedar Rapids area, including a friend whose wife is due to give birth any day now.

They began talking about the dogs and cats that have been left behind, and of course, that about broke my heart. Apparently the Washington Animal Rescue League has gone into IA so help save the puppies. Check out this press release.

So, if you were thinking of adopting a puppy or cat, maybe this might be a nice idea?

Of course, I am always thinking of adopting a puppy....preferably a corgi....but, we'll see...
