gap attack

I was just looking at Gap's website when I came across these---
Ov vey!
I do remember when these were cool, and yes, I wore them...in sixth grade! That was what, 1992? Somewhere around there? I had this fabulous pair (so I thought!) from Limited Too. They were bright pinks, blues, oranges, purples, PAISLEY! With them, I wore an oversized silk button-down mens-style shirt. I thought I was SO cool.
I'm pretty sure I wasn't.
(I wonder if there is a photo of me somewhere, in this outfit...I should look for one!)
Anyway, I am not sure how I feel about stirrups making a comeback.
What do you think? Would you wear these?
PS. Speaking of the Gap, one of my favorite girls, Heidi, is giving away a pair of Gap jeans, and no, not these leggings :) Head over and check it out, and tell her that I sent you! Also, stick around and read her blog. She's fabulous, and I wish she'd move back to DC ;)

on wedding gifts

A few weeks ago, Steve and I went home to NH for the wedding of an old friend. She and I have been friends since we were little girls, and her parents and mine are also friends. I suppose you could call them family friends, as there are a few other families that fall into this "group," if you will; all of us being mutual family friends.

Anyway.

She and her husband are preparing to move to Alaska, as he will begin a Ph.D. program in Fairbanks this fall. They are driving from NH, with all of their belongings in a truck behind them (what an amazing adventure that will be, eh?!). They registered at Macys, but asked for gift cards, rather than actual gifts, as they wouldn't be able to transport them easily, due to limited space in the already full truck. I didn't go home for the bridal shower, but she did have one, and I suppose everyone just gave her gift cards.

Like me, my mother isn't big on registries (maybe I get it from her?), so she decided to make them a quilt (I get the quilting from my mum for sure!). She told the bride's mother of this, to be sure that the bride would like it, and the MOB assured my mother that the bride would love it. So, my mother picked out some fabrics in her favorite colors (red, orange and yellow! it is bright!) and made a big, gorgeous quilt for the bride and groom.

She finished it and called the bride (the bride knew about the quilt anyway- when my mother brought a card to the wedding, she put a few scraps of each fabric into the envelope, so the bride could see!). My mother wanted to bring the quilt by, so that the bride and groom could take it with them to Alaska.

The bride told my mother that there was no room in the truck and could she please mail it to them once they arrive in Alaska next month. My mother was a bit hurt by this. She understands that they don't have much room to deal with, of course, but really? Asking to mail it?

My mother actually folded up the quilt and put it into one of those special bags and sucked the air out! The entire quilt is now one inch thick! This could easily be slid under a car seat, right?

If you were driving from New Hampshire to Alaska, wouldn't you want a big, cozy quilt with you in the car?! When Steve and I drive to/from NH or Iowa, I love having a cozy quilt with me, to curl up in, especially at night!

Would you really want a handmade quilt mailed across and over an entire country? I do love the USPS, but I wouldn't want to take my chances with such an heirloom!

What do you think?

oh baby baby!

I found out last night that my friend Klaudia had her baby yesterday morning!
Hurrah!
Klaudia is a good friend from high school (her name is actually spelled with a C, but I spell it with a K...long story and joke between us, maybe I will tell the story some day, as it is amusing!).
She and her husband Sam live in Wisconsin and were married three years ago.
I'm working on a baby quilt for her, I will have to speed it up!
Once it is finished, I will post a picture, of course.
Welcome to the world, Sabrina Rose :)

fruit salad?

Earlier this week, fruits were on sale at Harris Teeter. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries were all on sale; buy one, get one free.
Of course, I bought one of each and got one free!
I've eaten some of them, but not all, and I don't want them to go bad. I know that I can throw the blueberries in the freezer (in a big ziploc baggie?) and they
will be okay.
What about the strawberries? Should I slice them up and then put them in freezer bags? Or can they be frozen whole?
Help!

big Friday night!

How fun! Heidi over at Handmade by Heidi is hosting a Friday night sew-in!

Sounds lovely- (from Heidi's blog)
Make a post on your blog - letting all your readers know about the sew-in. Spread the word.. we could all use the virtual sewing support and encouragement.
On Friday – 07/23/10 - Get your house settled, put on your comfy jammies.. maybe make a cup of tea.. and sit down to work on some of those projects (or anything else that you want to work on.. maybe you want to knit.. or catch up on scrapbooking).
Then, sometime on Saturday - Make a post about what you worked on.. show us a picture or two on Flickr.
This is great, because I am in the middle of a baby quilt for a friend who is due any day now and nearly finished with a second baby quilt that I also have big plans for
(though that is a secret right now!)
I'd love to finish both this weekend...we'll see.
Also, Steve is away this weekend, so I have the entire weekend to myself, so I hope to get a lot of quilting done, as there is so much to do.
I probably owe you a potholder, when I offered them a while back ;)

the most amazing thing ever

Have you ever tried the Ciao Bella brand of sorbets? I'd seen them in stores, but never bought them. I don't buy much ice cream, believe it or not!
In April, I was at a B&B in Walla Walla, WA and this was served with breakfast---
It is amazingly delicious, I can't even tell you how much I adore it.

As soon as you are done reading this post, rush to the gorcery store and buy some.
You won't regret it.
Trust me.

hair today....

Has anyone tried a Brazilian Keratin treatment for their hair? I've been reading a bit about them and am intrigued. I think it could work well with my hair, but the price makes me hesitate a bit. There is a place in DC that does them and I read the reviews on yelp, and every single review was amazing and got five stars. Still, I'd love more opinions, if possible!

Also, I just made the amazing discovery that there is a Serendipity 3 in DC! Apparently it is in Georgetown, and opened in May! I have no idea how I missed this news! I must go, and soon!

Oh, and remember my giveaway? VA Girl, you're the winner! Please email me (find my email on my profile page) and I will put you in touch with Eileen, in order to claim your prize!

PS. Have you voted for LiLu yet? GO DO IT!!!!

essie!

Look at this!
Essie has a nail polish color called Tea and Crumpets! Fate!
I SO need this, wouldn't you say?
They call it a subtle and frosted beige.
Sounds good to me.

My half birthday is coming up...anyone want to buy it for me? :)

that girl!

Do you know LiLu? She lives here in DC and is pretty darn great. Like really great, and possibly one of the most hilarious people you've ever met.
Ever.
Something so amazingly cool happened to her, and she could use your help, so I am passing this along, and you should too!
MTV (you know them, right? don't tell me you don't watch The Hills...) is having a search for their first ever twitter jockey and LiLu is in the running! Crazy, right?
Read her post here for the details. Her profile and a hilarious video can be found here.
Are you on twitter? Tweet this- Follow @LivitLuvit, my favorite contestant in the @MTVTJ search for MTV’s first Twitter Jockey! #zyncmtvtj
She'll love you forever. Really.
What you really need to do though, is go to the facebook page and vote for her. Don't even look at the other contestants, they are not cool in the least.
LiLu is cool. Trust me.

a heavy heart

I don't know if you saw the news yesterday, but cnn, along with many others covered it. Outside of Seattle, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter went down, taking the lives of three crew members and injuring a fourth.
One of those crew members was married to an old school friend of mine. They have three young children; ages 8, 6 and 2.
My heart breaks for them; I cannot even fathom what they are going through right now, what she is telling her babies about where their father is.
Coincidentally, earlier this week, she had flown home with the babies, to spend time with their families in New England, so I know she has the comfort of her loved ones when she needs them the most. She is in my thoughts and prayers.
Tonight, hug your husband/wife/son/daughter just a little closer and tell them how much you love them. Hearing someone say that they love you never gets old and you really can't say it enough.
