a quick trip to Detroit

Happy Monday! How was your weekend? Mine was busy and whirlwind. Steve's sister had a baby boy last week, so we drove to Detroit Friday afternoon to see her and her husband, and meet the new baby! We left mid-afternoon on Friday, and got there around midnight, after making a few stops, of course. The hotel we stayed in was awful - they lost our reservation and were not apologetic about it in the least. They finally sorted it out, but by the time we got into the room, it was after 1am, and of course, we were exhausted, and a bit hungry.

Luckily, Steve's favorite, White Castle, has several (24 hour!) Detroit locations,
so off he went.

Sheepette decided to try a few fries too.

I happen to be obsessed with Tim Hortons, a Canadian coffee chain, and they also have several Detroit locations, so I was quite pleased about that. We might have gone twice in the weekend, and I'd have been fine with going more than that  ;)

I love the iced cappuccinos, and the Timbits are just really fun. I wish they had a DC location. Maybe someday. Until then, I will dream about it!

I promise I didn't eat all 40 on the way home...some are to bring to work with me! My co-worker's wife went to college in Canada, so some are for her too!

We also brought two dozen Georgetown Cupcakes to Heather! She loves them!

You may know that Detroit is located just over the Canadian border from Windsor, Ontario, and I love seeing the Bridge to Canada sign! There really wasn't time for a trip over this time, but next trip for sure!

On the way home on Sunday, we stopped by the Flight 93 9/11 Memorial in PA. I didn't take any photos there, as it felt a bit disrespectful to me (most everyone else there was, but it was just a personal decision for me). I saw this massive elephant right by where you get back on the highway, and I was wildly amused by it.

You may notice that there are no photos here of Heather and the baby...I don't feel right about posting photos of children without their parents permission, so I always ask first. I don't think that Heather knows about my blog, so I think it's best not to post them for now. Maybe in the future! For now, you'll have to trust me when I say that he's adorable!

I think I got a bit carsick on the way home (not actually sick), as I didn't feel well for most of the ride. I woke up this morning still not feeling too well, so I am home from work today. I'm hoping I didn't pick up a bug or something there, and it was just too many timbits  ;)

How was your weekend?

poll of the day

Oh hey! I have a blog! It seems it has been a bit forgotten as of late. No good reason why. Sometimes this happens, eh? Summertime and the living is easy? Something like that?

So, today's poll- when going on a long(ish) trip, when do you begin packing and are you terribly organized about it? Do you plan outfits in advance and pack accordingly? Or do you just toss a variety of things into your suitcase and wing it?

I'm not the most organized of packers. I don't really plan outfits in advance, with a few exceptions, so I just pack what I think I'll want to wear. Of course, I never wear everything that I pack! I was home in NH for the 4th of July weekend, so 2.5 days and had about eight outfit combinations and 12 pairs of undies. Seriously :) Maybe I need a method to my madness?

Friday night, Steve and I are leaving for the UK for the week! We fly out of BWI that night, have a stopover in London and then land in Glasgow on Saturday around 2pm local time. We'll be there one night, staying with friends, and then are driving down into England to stay with friends there for two nights before heading back into Scotland to the Highlands! Eventually, ie Thursday, we'll be back in Glasgow for a friend's wedding to end the week.

I'm so excited! It's been a while since I've had a good, real vacation like this and I really need it!

Are you going anywhere fun this summer?

greetings from Washington, DC

Everyone likes postcards, right? If you do, can you help out with a school project for a friend?

My friend Crissy's young cousin is doing a school project (she's in 4th grade) where they have a race to gather as many postcards from different states as they can. She is in Massachusetts and is looking for exotic states that are far from New England :)
Could you help her out and send a postcard from your lovely state? The postcard does have to be postmarked from that state, otherwise I'd send her about a dozen myself! I have the address the postcards should be sent to, but I don't want to put it here, for obvious reasons, so if you want to help out, and send along a postcard, please send em an email (my email is on my profile page), or comment, and I can reply back to you with where the postcard should be sent to.
Also, if you want to blog about this too, I'd love it! I'd love it if she could get a postcard from all 50 states, so if you have friends in hard to get states, please forward this to them!
I should mention too, that this is a race, so it makes it more fun :)

breakfast at Cinderella's Castle!

The other night, I was cleaning and packing (have I mentioned that I am moving this weekend?) and came across this photo, from our trip to Disney World in 2008!
Lexi, Steve and Cinderella :)

I had never been to Disney at all before (shocking, I know!). We were walking in and of course, came to Cinderella's Castle and there was a huge line. Of course, stopped to investigate, and found that it was a line for breakfast with the Princesses! YES!!!! I knew that I wanted to do this, but what I didn't know, was that most people make reservations for their family six months in advance! Oooops. I asked the girl at the desk, and it turned out that since it was just the two of us, and no children, we had just a 15 minute wait! Breakfast was delish, and I got to meet Snow White, Belle, Jasmine and more!
I'll have to post some of the other photos sometime...they are too funny, especially the one of Steve and Jasmine, hehe!
Who is your favorite Disney Princess?

yo yo love

There is a quilting method called yo yo quilting that I love, but it is not something that I have mastered yet, or even attempted for that matter! I think they are just so cute and you can do a great deal with them.

Over the weekend, Steve and I drove down to Charlottesville, VA where we visited some wineries and drove through very scenic countryside. At one point, I don't know where we were, but we drove by a country store. I love country stores, so I convinced Steve to stop. I figured, with the name of Greenwood Country Store, it would have old fashioned candy, big jars of pickles and root beer floats. Turns out, I was wrong.

It was an antique shop! They had the most beautiful things and the prices were amazing. I saw so many things that I wanted to bring home, but managed to refrain, mainly because Steve was there to keep me in line :)

This is my favorite---

These are quilted yo yo's that I mentioned above, and they are in a small white shabby-chic esq frame, measuring 4" x 6"! I'm not sure when it was put together, but the yo yo's look quite old, if you look closely (you probably can't tell from the photo!). It was also a whopping $8. Love! Once I get my sewing room set up, I want to hang a shelf on the wall, and place this frame on the shelf! I have the vision in my head already :)
I also bought a vintage Nancy Drew book, I can't recall which one, off the top of my head, but it is an early edition, and was $3.
The shop had sooo many gorgeous linens, and I am still kicking myself for leaving it all there. They had a set of French blues; a table runner, eight placemats and matching napkins, and was only $8! I am wishing I had grabbed that too!
If you ever find yourself in Greenwood, VA, be sure to stop in the General Store! It is across from the post office on Greenwood Station Road, VA route 690 and nearby route 250.
I love antique shops and need to find some around DC that I can visit!
Are you an antique lover? Where is your favorite shop? If I visit you, will you take me there?

too much travelling?

Is there such a thing as too much travelling? I never thought so, until today! I've been out of town the last two weekends. I worked three days last week and four days the week before. Last weekend I was on the west coast, in Seattle and Walla Walla, WA (and in Oregon for about an hour!), so I visited two new states. This past weekend, I went to Iowa for the first of six weddings this year.

I'm not sure why Steve is looking a bit goofy in this photo, but here is us at the wedding reception.

The wedding was at a lovely old historical church and the reception was held in a lodge at a local state park. It was low-key, like the other Iowan weddings we've gone to, where we were among the most dressed up. The wedding was on Friday, so Saturday we visited friends and then went down to the Amanas, one of my favorite places, as you know! It was a quick trip there, but I did go into my favorite quilt shop there and found some adorable fabrics, including some 1930's reproduction prints, which is my current favorite. They are too cute, so I am thinking up ideas of things to make from them!

My passport expires in October and I need to renew it now, as you aren't supposed to travel with it within six months of its expiration. This means that I've had it for nearly ten years, which means that I was in Luxembourg nine years ago right now. How is this possible?! I will admit that I was a little annoyed when I realized that its final trip was to Iowa. Lame! I should have planned a trip back to Luxembourg, so it could go back to its roots and travel full circle :) Yes, I use my passport travelling domestically too...it's just easier, I find.

How was your weekend? What did you do?

Wednesday Wednesday

Happy Wednesday, hosted by Miss Philly!

This Wednesday, I am in one of my favorite cities, BOSTON! If you've never been to Boston, you are seriously missing out. It's amazing, to say the least.

Two years ago, the company I was working for at the time, had their annual meeting there. My sister lives there, and of course, my family is in nearby NH. Steve came up at the end of the meeting, so we could spend some time there. He had never been! Awful. I know.

You all know the story Make Way for Ducklings, right? At the Boston Garden, there is a statue of Mama Duck and her babies! I didn't know, but apparently there is also the same statue in Moscow, given to Former Soviet First Lady Soviet First Lady Raisa Gorbachev by Former First Lady Barbara Bush! Wikipedia has the story, if you are so inclined.

Here we are :)

The next time you are in Boston, check it out! So much fun.
Next time I'm in Portland, I totally want to see the Ramona Quimby statue....

worldliness Wednesday

Once again, it is time for Miss Classy in Philly's Where in the World Wednesday! You know you love it :)

This week, I am in Krakow, Poland, where I seem to have left my heart a few years ago. If you are a new reader, I lived there for two years while studying and getting a Master's degree. It was all sorts of amazingness that I miss every day. Most of my photos are not scanned...yes, I had an old camera that used film! Gasp! There are a few that are online...

This photo was taken a few buildings over from where my school was. It was the summer of 2003 and it was the day that Poland had their referendum as to whether or not they wanted to join the EU (I think we all know they voted to join, right?) It was such an exciting day; there had been all sorts of campaigns and whatnot, for both sides, telling people why they should vote yes or no.

I got swept up into it, since I'd worked on a few campaigns prior to that, so it was exciting, even though I couldn't vote, obviously! As I said, one of the polling stations was right by my school, and one of the administrators knew how into it I was, so he took me over and explained to the pollers that I just wanted to see what was going on...so they let me come in, and walk around, just to see! They also gave me a pin that said "yes, I voted!" which is what I am pointing to in the photo :)

I realize the photo is a bit grainy...again, it is an anctual photo that was scanned, so not the best quality! Still though, it was an exciting day for Krakow, and all of Poland, for that matter!
Where are you this Wednesday???
PS. Be on the lookout for a giveaway coming up soon!

Wednesday in Scotland!

I missed Where in the World Wednesday last week, hosted by Miss CiP, so here I am this week, trying to get back on track!

This week, I'm in Inveraray, Argyll, Scotland!

In October 2007, Steve and I went to the UK for a week. My sister was spending the semester in London, so we spent a few days there with her and then rented a car and drove north! We stopped in Derbyshire to visit some friends there as well, and then kept going north to Scotland! We spent a night in Glasgow and then drove to Inveraray, as we wanted to see the Inveraray Castle, which was all sorts of amazingness and gorgeousness (I'll post more pictures of the trip later, if you'd like).

In the town of Inveraray, there is a shop called Loch Fyne Whiskies, where we went into sample some of their finest malts! I am not a huge whiskey person, but Steve liked it enough to buy a few bottles! Also, I ordered some for him one Valentines Day too, as they ship overseas!

Here's me, at the shop :)

Wednesday wanderings

Guess what? It is Wednesday and time for Classy in Philly's Where in the World Wednesdays!

This week, I am in one of my favorite U.S. cities- Boston! It's close to home (NH, obviously), but this time, I was here for work. I had a week-long conference there a few years ago, and once it ended, I stayed for a few extra days, to see my sister (she lives there), and show Steve around, as he'd never been.

We were on Newbury Street, and at the time, there was a Whittard of Chelsea, a lovely English tea shop that had a few stores in the States, but from my understanding, the Boston locations are now closed. So, so sad. If anyone knows differently, please let me know! There was also one at Faneuil Hall. Anyway, I digress. I found the shop on a lunch break, as our hotel was nearby, and it was soon after Easter, so all the cute Easter teapots and such were on sale. Of course, I bought several. They also had a tea bar, where you could mix your own tea!

Me, blending my own tea! Love! You could follow recipes they had there, or just make your own. I don't totally remember what I made, but it did involve lavendar, one of my favorite things.
Still so sad that this shop is closed. If I'm wrong, make my day and let me know.
Where are you this Wednesday???

where in the world is Lexi Sandiego?

Happy Wednesday and time again for Miss Classy's Where in the World Wednesday!

This is me at Disney World! It was last October (2008) and it was my first time there, ever, in my life. Note the 1st visit button that I am proudly sporting!

Some friends of ours were married in nearby Fort Meyers, so Steve and I decided to make a little vacation out of it and spend a few days in Orlando first. We spent a day at Disney World and then another at Epcot, and the third day was between Universal and Animal Kingdom. I wish we'd had more time, but we had to drive down for the wedding. While we were there, Epcot was hosting the International Food and Wine Festival, which was really fun to check out.

While we were there, we also had breakfast at Cinderella's Castle with the Princesses! Also, a friend of mine from home had been married the weekend before, and she and her new husband were honeymooning at Disney, so we saw them, which was nice. Her family is obsessed with Disney...I'm not kidding when I tell you that they've been there dozens of times! They go several times a year, and he proposed there too, right on Main Street, USA!

This photo is from one of those little shops...I loved the crazy hats!

If you want to see a few more photos from that trip, look here. Clearly I really like this crazy hat photo, because it is in that post and it has also been my facebook photo at times!

where is Lexi this week?

Happy Wednesday!

Once again, it's time for Where in the World Wednesday, hosted by Miss Classy in Philly. The point of WitWW is to post a photo of you somewhere in the world...it doesn't have to be somewhere foreign or tropical, but just somewhere you've travelled to...it could be in your hometown!

After last week's premiere post for WWW, where I was in Poland, I thought I'd post somewhere a little closer to home. This is me, here in DC, but "in" Luxembourg! I'm standing in front of the Embassy of Luxembourg, so technically, I am on foreign ground ;)

I've actually been to the Embassy several times for various events, and it is gorgeous. I've been inside several embassies, and I think that Luxembourg is my favorite. Maybe I am biased, since I studied in Luxembourg for six months, but I am okay with that :) The last time I was there, for a lecture, I was with a friend and we were enjoying a glass of wine before the event began, when a man walked over to us, began chatting with us, and introduced himself as one of the officials from the Embassy! He offered us a tour, which was amazing.

When I studied in Luxembourg, it was spring 2001 (really? that long ago?!), I didn't have a digital camera, so all of my photos are actual prints that I had developed at the store! Remember when we had to do that?! One of these days, I should scan some. While in Luxembourg, I travelled all around the Duchy, to parts of France and Belgium, including Paris and Brussels (Brussels is AMAZING!). We spent time in Germany (have you ever heard of Mosbach? you're my new best friend if you know where it is!) and I went to both England and Poland, beginning my love affair with Krakow.
Ahhhh, those were the days...
Where are you this Wednesday???

where in the world is Lexi?

So after reading everyone's posts, I've decided to participate in Where in the World Wednesday, hosted by Miss Classy in Philadelphia. I've been thinking about it for a while, but always forgot until it seemed like it was too late, but here I am!

This is me in Zakopane, Poland, which is a resort town on the Polish-Slovak border. When I lived in Krakow, we went there several times, as it was only about two hours away and such a neat place. I really adore it. It lies at the foot of the Tatra Mountains and is a ski resort town. They've hosted several ski championships in past years too!

There are two streets that intersect and all along those streets are amazing restaurants and booths selling all sorts of wonderfulness. People sell handmade wooden toys, knit sweaters, blankets made of sheepskin and wool, mittens and hats, slippers and everything else you can think of.

Including puppies!!!

These puppies are called owczarek podhalanski, or Tatra Mountain sheepdogs. They are the most adorable and wonderful dogs you've ever seen, and as you can see, I totally fell in love with this little guy! Also, they are huge. In that photo, the puppy I am holding was about six weeks old! They grow up to be larger than St. Bernards! I want one in the worst way. In a perfect world, I'd have an owczarek and a corgi :)

I remember the first time I saw them- there was a group of teenage boys selling these puppies. They had a few of them in boxes and you could hold them. In my not so great Polish, I asked the cost. I almost died when the boy told me that he was only $75! If I were to find one here, they'd probably be a few thousand dollars, as they are a very rare breed in North America. Of course, if I were Polish, and not a "rich American," I could bargain, but as soon as they hear my accent, it's all over! On another occasion, a Polish friend's sister bargained one of the boys down to around $25! (of course, these puppies are technically too young to leave their mother, and don't have the proper papers to come into the U.S., but that's a whole other story!)

So one of the days, one of these Polish puppies will be mine :) Yes, Steve is aware of my obsession with them!

Did you ever fall in love with anything crazy while abroad?

Amana love

While we were in Iowa last week, we took a trip to the nearby Amana Colonies, which is one of my favorite places in Iowa. It is a collection of seven villages that were begun by German settlers in the 1860's or so. It was begun as a way of communal living and stayed that way until the 1930's. Today, the villages are part of the National Register of Historic Places and is a tourist destination, as the area is filled with shops and restaurants and is really just so adorable.

I'm pretty much in love with it, and insist on going every time we are in Iowa! It's a bit over an hour from Steve's parents house, so it isn't a bad drive at all. I took some pictures, and will post them later, but here is one of a few of my purchases, from the German bakery!

Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

If the words are too small to read, it is a loaf of old-fashioned Dutch dill bread, dill mustard and a jar of Amana seasoning, whatever that means! You know how much I love my spices, I wasn't going to leave that behind!

They have bakeries, meat shops, a basket shop, a quilt shop (of course I went in there!), chocolate shops, wineries, a woolen mill, and so much more! If you are nearby Iowa, or ever go, make sure to go to the Amanas!

all the world at rest

I spent some time yesterday reading through a folder full of emails from my time in Krakow. My father actually saved every single email I sent to him and burned them onto a cd for me. I saved them to my laptop, in case the cd ever goes missing! They will come in handy when I finally write my book, but that is another story!

I found this one, and it struck me, as I wrote it six years ago this weekend. Like the expression says, it seems like just yesterday. I can still remember the feeling I had that evening in the cemetery and I can feel the goosebumps I had. It was such a moving experience and I wanted to try to share it with my parents and aunt (my aunt and mother are sisters, and their mother, my grandmother is Polish- her father, my great-grandfather was born in the Krakow area and moved to the U.S. at a young age).

Subject : All Soul's Day

So today is All Souls Day in Poland. Well, I guess it is
everywhere, but here, it's a big deal and a national holiday.
People go to the cemetery and light candles on the graves of
their loved ones. I hadn't gone last year, because I didn't
quite realize the significance of the day, but we decided to
go today. We waited until dusk, because then you can see all
the lit candles and all. We went to Rackowicki, the biggest
cemetery in Krakow. It's actually not too far from the flat I
lived in all year. As we were getting closer, you could see
the candles burning in the different colored holders. It
really was incredible. There were little kiosks along the way
set up so you could buy candles if you didn't have any with
you. There were so many people there, I couldn't believe it.
Because of the burning candles and since it was dark, there
were shadows everywhere and it was hard to see where you were
walking and I was afraid I was going to fall. We just walked
around for a while, looking at the different gravestones. Some
were so old and falling over, some were brand new. There were
also large ones for families, then ones with just one or two
people on the stone. I was looking at names, and I saw one
that could have been Grammy's family, but I am not sure. The
problem is that I am not sure exactly how she spelled her
maiden name, but also, there are variations in spelling. It
was Komoszinski, but the sz makes a sh sound, or it could be
just an s with an accent, which also makes that sound. It
looked pretty old and I couldn't make out any of the dates on
it. Plus, of course, the lighting was very poor, as we were
relying on candle flames to read inscriptions. There is a
chapel inside, and there was a priest inside who was reading
names off a list. When you walked in the gates, you could give
money to someone and they'd add your loved ones name to the
list that would be read. I guess it's like when people dedicate
masses at home, but there are so many people, that they can't
do that. It was so eerie though, hearing this voice boom down
from what seemed like the Heavens, listing out name after name
after name..."Stanslawa, Agnieszka, Irena, Francuszka,
Wiktoria, Magdalena, Przemyslaw, etc..." After so many names,
he would stop, and you'd hear this bell ringing, and I had
chills going up and down my spine. I wish I could adequately
describe the feeling and the mood, but there is no way. You'd
look around and there were candles burning for what seemed
like miles around you. They were in those little plastic
holders that were different colors, so in a weird way, it
seemed like Christmas, because you could see the different
colors surrounding the flames. I would have taken a picture,
but it wouldn't have come out and also, it seemed a bit
disrespectful to me. It was like how at Auschwitz, you are
allowed, but the first two times I was there, I couldn't bring
myself to do it, but the third time I went, I took a few. I'd
like to go there once more before I come home, I think.
Anyway. Really though, it was such an incredible feeling and I
wish that you could have seen it. I wish Grammy could be here.
How was she yesterday? I was thinking of her all day and
wanted to call, but I don't have a phone, so I couldn't. She
was in my thoughts though, please let her know that. I sent a
note, but it may not have arrived on time.

I'm going home now. I'm tired. I didn't do much all day, but I
am still exhausted. I think the the nights of staying up
working on the thesis are catching up with me and now that I
am done, I can reward myself with extra sleep.

Much love,

Lexilooo

I remember the feeling I had when I saw the grave marker with what could have been my family name. As I said in the email, I wasn't sure, because of the possible spelling variations, in addition to the stone being quite old. I wanted to go back the next day, to see it in the daylight, but I knew that there was no way I'd ever find it again, because we made so many turns, I had no idea where it was.

This weekend would also be my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. My grandfather passed away very suddenly the December prior to this, so that was their first anniversary for my grandmother without him. They had the most amazing love, like no other I've ever seen. I can only hope that my marriage will emulate theirs, but I'm not sure that anything else ever could. The love they shared was like none other.

Many of my memories of Krakow have been tucked back into a corner of my heart, to be kept safe for always. There are some moments, like this one, that I don't want to ever forget.

I lied

Apparently I was wrong. Wedding season is not over. I have one more to attend. In Iowa. On Halloween.

Sigh. Just when I thought I was done...

It's not a real wedding...it's a vow renewal ceremony. The kicker? It is Halloween themed and I am supposed to dress like a pirate. For a wedding.

Seriously.

I have no idea how I get myself into these things.

New York/Niagara fun!

Right, so we went to New York and Niagara Falls a few weeks ago and I am finally getting around to posting a few pictures. There are loads more on facebook, but I didn't think you'd want to see all hundred or so that we took!

We left at 4am...clearly NOT my idea! Sheepie was a great co-pilot :)

Totally funny, because I had tweeted recently about how nice it would be if there were coconut M&M's and apparently there are! I found these at a gas station somewhere in PA and bought several bags. They are limited editions, but I hope they stick around! They are so good!

Steve and I at winery number one of the day, of about a dozen! Oh, and it was approximately 10:30am when we pulled into the driveway :)

Sheepie likes fruit wines the best.

Yum.

I'm pretty sure I need a Vespa. How cute would I be, cruising around DC on one of these?

Winery number seven or so.

YAY! Niagara Falls!

So in love with Tim H.

Loonies are my favorite.

We had dinner at the Skylon Tower, where we ate 750 feet above the Falls! The view was amazing and the food was also excellent :)

Us at the Falls. It's taken by me, so we are blocking most of them, but they are there!

Horseshoe Falls, the Canadian side. It's so much prettier than the American side.

The view from the B&B we stayed at, Merritt Hill Manor in Penn Yan, NY. So, so lovely and how much do you want to sit in those chairs?

I could post more photos...maybe I will...

Niagara Falling

Hello from Ontario!

I'm in Niagara Falls for the night, on the Canadian side, which is so much better then the American side. It's been a busy day, but loads of fun. We left DC yesterday (Thursday) at 4:15am (SO not my idea, obviously), but were in NY well before lunch, which was ideal. We pulled into the parking lot of the first winery on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail at approximately 10:30am. Awesome. From there, we drove north and hit about ten more wineries. We had lunch at one of them and kept on going! Of course, we bought a bottle or two at each one...

Wine-o's? Us? Nooooooo.....

Today we got up early again (not as early!) and left our B&B around 9am to head to the Falls, which I love! So, so pretty. We stopped at my beloved Tim Hortons for a breakfast snack and were at the Falls by lunchtime. After checking into our hotel, we drove a bit north to Niagara-on-the-Lake to visit a few more wineries. Many of them feature ice wines, which Steve loves and we don't see much of in VA, so that was a nice treat. Then we did the Falls, had dinner 700 feet about the Falls and then went to a casino where I lost $10. Oh well. It could have been far worse!

Of course, there are lots of pictures, which I will post when we get back.

Tomorrow we are heading back to the Finger Lakes for a wedding. Sunday, a few more wineries with some friends (on the other side of Seneca!) and then visiting a family friend in Binghamton before back to DC on Monday...

Happy long weekend to you! Hope you are enjoying it!

oh Canada!

This weekend, we are heading to upstate New York for a wedding. The wedding is on one of the Finger Lakes, which will be so nice. My mother's best friend lives nearby, and we used to go up there every summer for a week or so. She has a barn full of horses and a house full of corgis, so I spent my days riding, mucking stalls and chasing corgis around the farm. I haven't been there in years, due to life getting in the way of everything fun.

We are driving up Thursday and are actually going to head to Niagara Falls first! Steve's never been there, though his parents honeymooned there years ago! I've been once, in 2004, when I was in London during the Federal Elections where I ran the campaign there. I had really wanted to go, but didn't think there was time to do so, since we were so busy with the campaign. I had to fly home in the middle of it for my brother's high school graduation, and on the way back from Toronto (it was cheaper to fly there than to London!), my friend stopped at the Falls for a few hours, since he knew how much I wanted to see them. They had just opened a new casino, so he played Texas Hold'em and I lost $3 (Canadian!) on a slot machine. Needless to say, I've only seen the Falls from the Canadian side. I think we'll go to both sides, I hope. I want a Canada stamp in my passport :) I never got one last time, because you didn't need a passport at the time, and even though I showed them mine, they didn't stamp it.

We also plan to check out a few wineries in the area, since there are so many. Have you been to any? Any good suggestions for places we should check out? I think we will do the wineries Sunday, and drive home Monday...
