it's my birthday! (well, almost)

So, since my birthday is quickly approaching, I've been considering where to have festivities. Over the last few years, I've had it at various bars in DC, but I thought that since I am turning 30 (wait, what?!), maybe I'd do something a little different this year, to kick off my 30's right.

A winery!

We all know how much I love wineries, and it seems like that would be a good place. They are usually spacious enough inside that they could seat a large (20ish?!) group. Plus, people could do their tasting, and then buy a bottle of their favorite. If you buy a bottle for $15ish, that is about the same as buying two drinks and leaving a tip in a bar, right?

The biggest problem that I see is the distance. Most wineries are not super close to DC, for obvious reasons, so people would have to drive an hour or so, depending on where they are coming from. My birthday is a Sunday, so it would be an afternoon thing, which I think would be perfectly lovely.

Question for you, dear friends. Would you think it was horrid if someone asked you to drive an hour or so for their birthday? (their 30th birthday! it's a big deal!) Would it be mean of me to ask my friends to do this? Obviously I'd look for somewhere close (my favorite Virginia winery is down in Charlottesville, almost three hours away...I won't do that!)

I'd totally drive an hour for your birthday. Especially if it was at a winery.

Thoughts? Opinions? Want to come celebrate with me? :)

I would if I had a car! Perhaps a carpool can be organized?

Heck, I just met you and I'd drive in from TN...LOL!

You did say wine...right?
Happy early birthday. Enjoy your thirties. I have a vague recollection of those years...LOL!

I don't that's unreasonable at all, especially since it'll be an afternoon thing and people won't (presumably) be just stopping by. I've thought about that many times actually, but a carpool is definitely a good idea.

i don't think it's too much to ask. after all i assume your friends are all adults as well so if they're not able to make it they'll let you know.
and a bottle of Barboursville reisling is totally worth an hour drive!

I don't think it's too much to ask, just give some advance notice? There's tons of wineries nearby, try Tarara in VA, my friends looooove it! They have some kickass dry red wines if you like that!

Happy almost Birthday. I don't think it's a big deal to drive an hour, espeically for a good friend and to a fun and unique place. However, you never know how people will act. A friend threw me a surprise party once in the burbs and hardly anyone came b/c it was 30 minutes. It really hurt my feelings.

Happy Early Birthday!!

I LOVE birthdays! I think that an hour drive to a winery would be doable, but I'd keep in mind that people may not want to drive that far.

I'd come!

for a friend's 30th birthday a bunch of us drove an hour and a half to do a wine tour in santa barbara, totally not asking too much. it's your birthdays and your friends should celebrate it with you however you want to celebrate.

Hey! I stumbled upon your blog from the comment you made on Julie's blog about a modern quilt guild in DC - I contacted Natalie (who was listed on Alissa's blog as the DC contact) and she emailed me back noting that there is definitely interest!

This is obviously totally random, but I didn't know if you were one of the others that had contacted Natalie about joining the DC area modern quilt guild, but if so, I just wanted to say hello! and happy birthday! and I absolutely do not believe that it's too much to ask to have a friend drive an hour to a winery :)

have a great day!

p.s. binding is definitely not as hard as it seems, I found a great tutorial here:

and I also watched some youtube videos which were totally helpful!

Happy quilting!

You've got me thinking about making the drive and I'm probably 8+ hours away. So NO, I don't think it's unreasonable. Happy early birthday! Have a great time, whatever you decide to do. Have a glass for me.

Have you thought about doing a limo bus or something? I live in the DC suburbs and there are tons of limo companies that do winery tours and have pretty good rates. If you can get a group together and everyone pitches in $40-$50 then no one has to drive!
