how to dress, what to wear

So later this month (the week before Christmas, to be exact), I am going back to Iowa for Steve's graduation. He's been working on a distance Master's program through Iowa State and graduates, finally.

Side note- why, oh why, would a school have a graduation ceremony the week before Christmas, at 7pm on a Friday night?! His graduation is Friday, December 18!!!

Of course, I've been to several graduation ceremonies before, but always in the spring, so I've worn a cute sundress. Obviously I won't be wearing a sundress in Iowa in December, and now I am a bit baffled at what to wear! Should I go with a sweater dress? Something like this from Loft? Or maybe this? I don't really seem to have much in the way of winter dresses. I have skirts, but I don't exactly want to wear a plaid skirt and turtleneck sweater.

Also, I don't want to go out and spend much, since I have yet to begin my holiday shopping, and still need to book flights! Ugh!

Suggestions? Thoughts?

my suggestion is that you start investing in cold weather dresses girl!
dresses in heavier weights, preferably with sleeves of some sort, or ones you can put at cardi and belt over... all work will in the colder days. the best part about dresses in the colder months is wearing tights!!

I'd say a sweater dress with sleeves type dress or a short sleeve with a cardigan, and I suggest wearing leggings or tights or boots of some kind. Or you could also wear pants...if you don't have anything else or can't find anything. Good Luck!

If I want to wear a summery dress I just pair it with a cardigan, tights, and boots! That way I can have more money to spend on the FUN things :) Love your blog!

I'd definitely go with something warm & fuzzy. But not too fuzzy. I like the first dress that you posted, but you could always do pants is you're concerned about being cold.

I'm no help, huh?

Forget comfort and warmth. Go for sexy! I love the first dress! Classic black! It's Steve's graduation - go all out for him and be the best dressed there. Show those other potatoes (wait, that's Idaho, sorry!) that you've got style!

I think a sweater dress is a perfect idea! They are my go to outfits for the winter...have a million. And they can be dressed up or down.

I would go with a sweater dress, tights and knee high boots if you have them!

I like both dress options from the Loft. Winter dresses are hard. It seems there are more options when the weather is warmer. Let us know what you end up wearing.

i say dark jeans and a cute sweater or something, that's what i would do. i don't think i have any winter appropriate dresses either but that's what cute scarves and sweaters are for :)
