i-what?

Okay, so ipods. Great invention, yes? I love mine. I use it to/from work and when I run. Ha, kidding. I don't run. :)

A few months ago, I was on the metro, sitting on one of the inside-facing seats right by the doors. The car was full, but not packed. There was a woman sitting next to me, middle aged, probably 50's or so. My music was on, I was not really paying much attention, until I saw her flailing her arms wildly. I looked at her and she said something. I took the bud out of my ear and she said, in a very nasty tone, "your music is so loud, turn it down."

I was mortified.

I've always thought myself to be a considerate person. I'm careful not to take up more then my seat on the metro. I always offer my seat to someone older, with children, pregnant, with a cane, etc etc etc. I move in if I have an empty seat next to me, so someone else can sit down.

I quickly turned it down so low that I could barely hear it myself, my face beet red with embarrasment, feeling the stares from the other riders. Luckily, my stop was next, so I got off immediately.

Now, I find myself often paranoid that my music is too loud and people are annoyed by it. There are times when I don't have my ipod, and I can hear the music from someone elses, but I don't say anything to them.

Do you say something to someone with loud music? Do you worry that your music is bothering others? How do you know when it is too loud?

Jeez, I think she was blowing the situation a little out of proportion. I can't imagine you listening to heavy metal or anything that would be loud and excessive to the point of requiring an intervention from flailing arms lady. Maybe she was having a bad day, or maybe she is just a butthead.

I keep mine alot lower when I am on the bus than at any other point. although that has more to do with the fact that I like to be able to hear everything going on around me.

but a couple weeks ago I sat next to someone who also had music playing but I could actually hear his OVER mine. I didn't say anything and would never do so but I do not like the idea that I could do that so I keep mine pretty quiet.

I have my ipod really loud all the time. I think for that instance, I would have turned it down, but the odds of someone being bothered by the sound level of your ipod is low, so I would just keep doing my thing unless someone tells you it's too loud.

All I can say is Bose In-Ear Headphones. Honestly, they're worth the money!

Oh please, this must be this woman's pet peeve and she was taking it out on you!

All the same, I'd be mortified, too. I also listen to my music way too loud.

That's ridiculous! I'm sure it wasn't too loud, the woman we just having a bad day.

When listening to my ipod, I usually take my earphones off and see if I could hear the music. If I can't, that means no one else can and I'm fine. So I put them back in and jam out.

Okay maybe not jam out, but still!

I've never been told that my music is too loud, but I seriously live in fear that it is. Just tonight I turned my ipod down, just in case. Something about coming home from work and zoning out to loud music is really a good escape.

I hate to say this, but I feel like there are a lot of cranky old ladies in this city. Honestly, if I was elderly and still riding the metro, and grew up in an era where everyone was perfectly conformed and there were no ipods, I'd probably be be bitter and mean, too. But that's not an excuse! I'd be mortified, too, even though I think she was way out of line. You are clearly not one of those degenerates who is going deaf while wearing gang symbols and having a hard time keeping your pants up. She should save her outrage for someone who deserves it. That or turn her hearing aid down on the train. Heh.

I think that lady was just a little rude. =[
Not everyone can appreciate good music, i guess.

I think that lady just had a problem. I try not to pump my ipod all the way up, but geesh... it's the metro. It's not like you were in her HOUSE. She could have gotten up and moved if she was THAT annoyed.

Oh, I understand the embarrassment! Sounds like she was just being rude though. I have a tendency to turn my music down in public- simply because as soon I as enter a public place, some really crazy song (i.e. Ice Ice Baby) comes on and I'm afraid people WILL hear it! HAHA!

screw her. at least you weren't playing a boombox.

ehhh. I always wonder if people can hear what I'm listening to. You forget how silent it is around you, until you turn your music down/off. Oops.

I figure if I can't hear it, most others can't. I don't really have it turned up though because I don't want to be one of those people...especially when I'm jamming to Miley Cyrus :P

I always feel like my IPOD is on too loud when I'm running at the gym. But nobody says anything so I think I'm just paranoid.
