a spicy giveaway!

Good morning and happy Saturday! Turns out, this is my 250th post, so I thought that a giveaway was appropriate, eh?

Today's giveaway involves one of my favorite things---

spices!

I'm sure I've made aware my cookbook obsession and mentioned recipes I've made, but those wouldn't be complete without some of the spices I use regularly. My favorite spice store is Penzeys. Do you know it? My best friend, a sous chef, sent me a few from there for my birthday one year and since then, I rarely buy them at a grocery store. You'd think that they would be more expensive, but that isn't the case at all. I've found that many of them are actually cheaper then even the store brand, and they are much better!

There are some that I use more often than others, of course, but I still have a pretty stocked up spice rack, I think (do you need to see pictures of that too?!). So, here's what I am offering you-

These are a few of my favorites---

Vanilla Sugar
Sweet Basil (French)
Sage (Albanian Whole Leaf)
Apple Pie Spice
China Cassia Cinnamon
French Thyme
California Minced Lemon Peel
Krakow Nights (Polish Seasoning)
Dutch Process Cocoa

The vanilla sugar is so nice sprinkled on fresh berries, to add just a bit of sweetness! I sprinkle the apple pie spice onto applesauce for a snack and I often add the lemon peel to muffins. The Krakow Nights was the first spice I got from Penzeys! I sometimes add that to kielbasa and potatos when I make those. Steve loves it!

Those are just a few of my favorites, though they have many, many more wonderful spices. The company is based in Wisconsin. If you are in the DC area, there is a store in Falls Church and Rockville, so go check them out. Otherwise, they ship, so order online :)

So for the giveaway-

For one entry, comment and tell me your favorite cooking spice.
For two entries, suggest a spice shop in your area that I may not know about, but should try.
For three entries, do the above and tweet about this giveaway and comment with the link.
For four entries, do the above and blog about this giveaway and comment with the link.
For five entries, do the above and become a follower of my blog. If you already do, let me know.

The giveaway will run for two weeks, until Friday, July 31 and the winner will be announced the weekend of August 1. It is likely that I will add a few goodies to the prize...not necessarily spices, but something else!

This is awesome. I got a huge box of Penzeys spices for our wedding and I LOVE them. I've long ago run out of the parsley, the cinnamon, the cocoa, and the Italian seasoning is nearly gone too, but I have enjoyed them all!

I'm so excited about this giveway. I've never heard of Penzeys. I just looked up their store locator and they have a location in Houston and Dallas. I'll will definitely stop in next time I'm visiting.

My favorite spice is cumin but it has to be used the right way. :) Of course, I'm a follower.

Task 1:
Mmmm...I'm like you, spices are an obsession. I have on of those little spice racks that pull out like a long drawer next to my oven - it's so full that I have to keep the overflow in an overhead cabinet.

So..picking one is HARD! Here's my latest favorite: I love Ginger Crystals ...great in Tea!

Task 2:
I doubt I can tell you of spice store you don't already know about since we're both in DC...but I'll give a stab at a website you might know...The Epicentre Exotic Herbs ... kind of an encyclopedia of herbs, really cool: http://www.theepicentre.com/

Task 3:
I'm not a twitter-er... :(

Task 4:
I'll be posting your contest on my blog.

Task 5:
I'm already a follower.

My favorite spice has got to be chili powder... mostly because it's a guarantee that B will like whatever I'm making! :-)

I love Italian Seasoning because I can add it to any of my sauces or soups, and it ups the flavor. Don't have a sweet spice shop for ya... I get mine at Whole Foods.

There's actually a spice called Krakow Nights? That's amazing! Almost as amazing as ALBANIAN whole-leaf sage. Love.

My favorite spice seems so boring in comparison -- Cinnamon. I put it in almost everything I bake, even when not called for. It's pretty tasty.

My favorite spice is Tony Chachere's Cajun Seasoning. More of a seasoning than a spice, perhaps, but it jazzes up veggies, fish, meat, chicken... EVERYTHING!

Our local Earth Fare has tons of great spices available.

I'm a follower, AND this giveaway ends on my birthday :-)

T&C, thanks for commenting on my blog! We are fans of Penzey spices here at Chez La Vie. Although we don't have a local shop, we stock up when we visit family in Madison, Wisconsin!

Is garlic a spice? That would be my all-time favorite, but...

My favorite Penzey spice is Sunny Paris--especially on scrambled eggs.

This is such a fun giveaway! I don't normally use a lot of spices in general when I'm cooking, although I'm pretty sure that vanilla sugar is calling out to me
